What Moms Do

Okay, so I wasn’t perfect

Sometimes I was too tough on you

Said no when I should’ve said yes

Not tough enough

Said yes when I should’ve said no.

Sometimes I held on so tight

You had trouble spreading your wings.

No, I didn’t get it right all the time

But I did the best I could with what I had

I sacrificed more than you could ever know

And I was never sorry about it.

I fought for you

And got beat down a few times,

But I wear my scars proudly.

I never gave up, never gave in

Because I knew you needed me

And though the licks I’m taking now

Come from you,

I lift my chin

But not my fists

And stay in the fight

Because I believe that someday

You’ll understand that:

Moms are not perfect

We get it wrong

We make mistakes;

But we never stop fighting

And we never give up

And we never stop believing

In the day when our kids finally get it.

I just wanted to give you the best of me

To bring out the best in you

No matter the cost

No matter the loss…

That’s what moms do.
